Ptosis is a (drooping) of the upper or lower eyelid. Depression may be worse after being awake longer, when individual muscles are tired. This condition is sometimes called 'lazy eye', but that term normally refers to amblyopia. If severe enough and left untreated, the drooping eyelids can cause other diseases such as amblyopia or astigmatism. It is therefore particularly important for the treatment of this disorder in children at an early age, before it can interfere with vision development. Ptosis occurs when the muscles to lift the eyelid (levator and Müller muscle) are not strong enough to function properly.
